Rules and Regulations
Invitation
The Nature Trust of British Columbia invites amateur photographers to enter its 2010 Celebrating Nature in BC Photo Contest. We are looking for striking digital images of BC’s natural diversity.
Who May Enter
The contest is open only to amateur photographers over the age of majority who are residents of British Columbia, Canada.
Contest Categories
The categories for the photo contest entries are:
- The Web of Life (diversity of living things in BC)
- The Big Picture (landscapes in BC )
- The Power of Nature (storms, glaciers, waterfalls, etc. in BC)
- Making a Difference (lparks, green spaces, rain gardens in BC)
How to Enter
There are two ways to enter photos. Each photo must be submitted by only one of these two methods.
1. Upload the image(s) to The Nature Trust's public group on Flickr™ http://flickr.com/groups/naturetrustofbc/ and tag each for the appropriate category:
To upload your photos to Flickr™, you may use your existing Flickr™ or Yahoo!™ ID to login and join The Nature Trust's public Flickr™ group. If you do not have a Flickr™ account, you can sign-up quickly and easily for a free account at Flickr™.com. Flickr™ and Yahoo!™ are registered trademarks of Yahoo, Inc.
Once you join The Nature Trust's group on Flickr™, you can upload your photos to the group. Then, tag each photo to the category you're entering using
(Category)_(First initial Last name)_(Your own photo number)_TNT10 (to indicate The Nature Trust 2010 contest)
For example
Web of Life_JSmith_001_TNT10
Big Picture_JSmith_002_TNT10
Power of Nature_JSmith_003_TNT10
Making a Difference_JSmith_004_TNT09
If you do not tag your photo, it will not be considered for the competition.
If you have trouble using Flickr™, please consult their help files. The Nature Trust is not responsible for any issues or problems you encounter while trying to upload a photo on Flickr™.
After you upload your photo you must fill out a submission form at www.naturetrust.bc.ca/pc2010form.htm. Submission notice includes your name and contact information.
When you submit photos you automatically opt-in to receive a quarterly Nature Trust e-newsletter. Your privacy is important to The Nature Trust; your email will not be sold or used for anything other than sending you a quarterly e-newsletter.
2. Or, complete our online submission form www.naturetrust.bc.ca/pc2010form.htm and email your photo to photos@naturetrust.bc.ca after you complete the online submission form. Photos emailed must be sent one at a time. If your email has multiple photos on it, it will be disqualified.
Photos submitted via the online form and then emailed to photos@naturetrust.bc.ca may be uploaded by The Nature Trust staff to its public group on Flickr™.
On the online form, entrants must designate the appropriate category in which their images are to be judged.

Maximum Number of Entries Per Person
Each entrant may submit entries in any category he/she wishes and may submit entries at different times during the entry period, but no entrant may submit more than six (6) total entries. If an entrant exceeds these limits, The Nature Trust may at its absolute discretion either disqualify all the entrant's entries or select at its absolute discretion entries to go forward for judging and reject the remainder.
Contest Timeline
June 10, 2010 - Contest opens
October 8, 2010 – Contest closes (11:59 a.m. Pacific Standard Time)
October 15, 2010 – Finalists chosen in each category
October 18, 2010 – Public voting begins
October 25, 2010 – Public voting closes
October 29, 2010 - Grand Winner announced
Winning Photos
Twelve photos will be selected as finalists, three per category. The 12 finalists will be chosen by The Nature Trust staff and judges, then the contest will be open to public voting. Public voting, decided by email ballot, will decide a winner for each category. One Grand Prize winner will be selected from the category winners. A panel of judges will choose the Grand Prize winner.
Each photo shall be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit.
Prizes
The grand prize winner will receive donated by Lens & Shutter and Nikon Canada a first prize of a Digital SLR-D3000 w/18-55vr kit (suggested retail value $579.95).
Each category winner will receive donated by Lens & Shutter and Booth Photographic a PrintFile 11 x 14 Wire Bound Album Portfolio Edition which holds 24 prints and a book entitled The Nature Trust of British Columbia: Over 35 Years of Conservation.
All prizes are non-transferable and no cash alternative is available.
Rules
The Nature Trust invites amateur photographers to enter its 2010 Photo Contest. Please read the following rules carefully before submitting any photos.
The Nature Trust 2010 Photo Contest is open to ALL amateur photographers who are residents over the age of majority of British Columbia, Canada, except employees of The Nature Trust, and the immediate families of such employees. By amateur photographer, we mean any beginning, amateur, or experienced photographers who do not receive a significant part of their income from photography.
By entering the contest you agree, that if selected as a winner, you will allow your photographs - and your name - to be published as selected award winner for 18 months on websites owned by The Nature Trust and used for promotions by The Nature Trust including but not limited to:
media advertisements, an electronic collection of winners, online photo features, and in emails and e-newsletters sent by The Nature Trust.
If your photograph is not selected as a winning photograph, then The Nature Trust will not use your photograph for promotional or any commercial purposes. Entrants retain ownership and all other rights to future use of their photographs. The Nature Trust shall have the right to verify, in its sole judgment, winner eligibility.
Camera-made digital images or scans of slides or prints should be uploaded as low-resolution jpegs. Digital photos must be three (3) megapixels or larger. Entries may be digital files, digital prints, color transparencies, color prints, or black and white prints as long as they are submitted electronically. Uploaded images cannot exceed 5 MB per file. The Nature Trust cannot be held responsible for entries that are lost, corrupted, or delayed during transit.
Photographs must be taken in British Columbia. Your images may only show portraits of flora and fauna in natural habitat or natural landscapes. Please do not include photographs of pets or domestic animals. Images of captive animals photographed in game farms will be disqualified.
Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still warrant full rights. You must disclose when and where the photo appeared previously upon submission.
Entrants must not infringe on the rights of any other photographer or person or submit images that involve the willful harassment of wildlife or damage to the environment by the photographer. All photographs should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared.
Photos that have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization (removal of dust, cropping, adjustments to exposure, color, contrast, sharpness etc.) are not eligible for contest entry. Use of advanced Photoshop and other techniques such as High Dynamic Range [HDR], replacement of portions of the image [cloning, etc. other than dust removal], multi image composites, etc. are not permitted and will be disqualified at the sole discretion of the judges.
Waiver
Winners must sign a waiver indicating that they have followed the rules, are residents of British Columbia, and that the photos have not been previously published.
Limitation of Liability
By entering this contest, all entrants agree to release, discharge and hold harmless The Nature Trust and its partners, affiliates,
subsidiaries, advertising agencies, agents and their employees, officers, directors, and representatives from any claims, losses, and damages arising out of their participation in this contest or any contest-related activities and the acceptance and use, misuse, or possession of any prize awarded hereunder.
The Nature Trust assumes no responsibility for any error,
omission, interruption, deletion, defect, or delay in operation or
transmission; communications line failure; theft or destruction of or
unauthorized access to contest entries or entry forms; or alteration of entries or entry forms. The Nature Trust is not responsible for any problems with or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any e-mail entry to be received on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the internet or at any website, human errors of any kind, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to entrants' or any other persons' computers related to or resulting from participation, uploading or downloading of any materials related to this contest.
