
The Nature Trust of British Columbia is a leading non-profit land conservation organization dedicated to protecting critical habitat for wildlife, fish, and plants in B.C. Since 1971, we have secured over 180,000 acres of ecologically significant land.
The Nature Trust of British Columbia (NTBC) is looking for a Land Securement Coordinator. The Land Securement Coordinator supports The Nature Trust of BC’s mission to acquire and manage lands with high ecosystem biodiversity values and at the greatest risk of being lost or degraded. The Land Securement Coordinator supports the Director of Land Securement and liaises with other NTBC teams to support the implementation of NTBC’s Strategic Plan and land securement goals.
The Land Securement Coordinator has broad experience and knowledge of science-based conservation approaches, land securement, stewardship and land management practices. The Land Securement Coordinator uses their multidisciplinary conservation expertise to support the administration of our land securement process, has significant grant and report writing experience, and excels at developing science and conservation information for wider public use.
The Land Securement Coordinator supports the Director of Land Securement in all aspects of the acquisition process. This is a full-time permanent position based in Vancouver, B.C. with the potential to be remote. Occasional overnight travel across B.C. is required. The Land Securement Coordinator will report directly to the Director of Land Securement.
Duties and Responsibilities
Grants and Reporting
- Support the grant proposal and management process including preparing and submitting funding applications, coordinating information with grant administrators, deadline tracking, and meeting interim and final reporting requirements.
- Assist developing conservation communication materials for donors and public fundraising campaign materials (press releases, presentations, reports and other publications).
- Support the preparation of Board of Directors’ packages.
- Support the preparation of support documentation and applications to the Ecological Gift Program.
Land Securement
- Support the Director of Land Securement in the acquisition process, including working with landowners, lawyers, appraisers, and other professionals to prepare legal agreements, real estate documents, leases, and agreements to gift for donations of land.
- Support the Support the Director of Land Securement in preparation of acquisition agreements and facilitate closing procedures.
- Support the Director of Land Securement to prepare requests for proposals, evaluate bids, and establish contracts for professional services, including timber valuations, appraisals, surveys, subdivision and rezoning processes, environmental assessments, and archeological surveys.
- Support the Director of Land Securement to assist with contract administration, processing accounts receivable and payable, and preparing and monitoring budgets.
- Support communication and coordination with partner organizations, including Federal, Provincial, and Local Governments, Indigenous groups, and Non-Government Organizations regarding land securement projects.
- Work with the Director of Land Securement, Conservation Science and Land Management teams, to research potential acquisitions and gather information on the suitability of lands for acquisition.
- Provide the Conservation Science team with pertinent information on potential acquisitions for inclusion in the Relative Ecological Assessment spatial evaluation runs.
- Assist in the management of the potential acquisitions database and use this information to prepare securement reports.
- Assist with file management to track securement projects.
- Work with the Director of Land Securement, Conservation Science and Land Management teams to develop the Potential Acquisitions Review reports for the Board of Directors.
- Support the Director of Land Securement to finalize and close the acquisition, including facilitating waiver of conditions and closing procedures. Identify and coordinate the completion of hand-off items (e.g. vendor/donor information for the Marketing and Development team, funding agreement requirements, Licenses, Authorizations, Permitting, Leases or Other Encumbrances, and property tax exemptions, etc.)
- The Land Securement Coordinator may be asked to provide other forms of organizational support including but not limited to conservation land stewardship, supporting NTBC events, and fundraising efforts.
Skills, Abilities, and Qualifications
- Bachelor or graduate degree in a related discipline from a recognized university (e.g. environmental studies, conservation biology, geography, ecology, natural resources management).
- Minimum of three to five years of relevant employment and/or related experience.
- Experience working in or with the not-for-profit environmental, conservation/land trust sector in Canada.
- Working knowledge of legal, financial, tax, and scientific issues involved in land protection.
- Strong knowledge of the principles of conservation biology and planning in BC.
- Strong knowledge of British Columbia’s flora and fauna with particular interest in sensitive, threatened, or endangered species and ecosystems.
- Familiarity with real estate appraisals, real estate agreements, and negotiations.
- Demonstrated project management skills, including excellent problem solving, planning and organizational skills, with attention to detail and timelines.
- Strong ability to prepare and manage timelines, budgets, goals, and expectations.
- Demonstrated skill and success in grant writing.
- Strong report writing skills.
- Contract management experience.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain and develop strong relationships with stakeholders.
- Comfortable working with an interdisciplinary team.
- Comfortable communicating to a wide range of audiences, ranging from the professional/technical level to public.
- Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
- Pleasant, professional behavior, using discretion when necessary.
- Flexible, reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat.
- Possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License and willing to submit a driver’s abstract.
- Passion for the natural environment of BC.
- Must be legally allowed to work in Canada.
