The Nature Trust of British Columbia is a leading non-profit land conservation organization dedicated to protecting critical habitat for wildlife, fish, and plants in B.C. Since 1971, we have secured over 180,000 acres of ecologically significant land.

The Nature Trust of British Columbia (NTBC) is looking for a Crew Lead and Crew Members who will assist in a variety of land management activities on over 20 NTBC conservation property complexes within the South Coast region. This will involve habitat restoration projects and site maintenance on NTBC conservation lands. The Crew will report directly to the South Coast Field Operations Coordinator and work as a coordinated team to complete the annual work plan.

These are full-time contract positions based in Vancouver, B.C.


Crew Member Duties and Responsibilities

  • Invasive species removal and maintenance of restoration sites using hand tools and power tools
  • Assist in writing an annual report on field work activities in collaboration with Crew Lead
  • Site assessments on conservation lands that may include wildlife and habitat inventory, GPS and mapping functions (e.g. ArcGIS Field Maps), reporting of land management issues and/or illegal activities, and inventory of signage and other infrastructure
  • Monitoring the ecological condition of conservation areas: plant inventories, wetland classification surveys, water quality monitoring, etc.
  • Site maintenance including replacement/repair of signage and infrastructure (fences, bird boxes) and litter/trash clean up and removal
  • Operation and safe handling of various tools and equipment, including chainsaws, brush saws, power tools and hand tools
  • Contribute to management of the South Coast Conservation Field Crew social media
  • Assist in the coordination and implementation of volunteer events
  • Represent and promote NTBC and land conservation efforts in a respectful and professional manner

In addition, the Crew Lead will:

  • Supervise Field Crew when Field Operations Coordinator is not in the field, ensure safety procedures are followed including daily safety meeting
  • Coordinate Conservation Field Crew activities and schedule with Field Operations Coordinator
  • Assist in planning and conducting restoration work (planting of native plants, invasive species removal

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in a related discipline (environmental studies, biology, ecological restoration, resource management etc.)
  • Paid or volunteer experience working in the outdoors in the environmental field
  • Comfortable with various handheld landscaping tools and operating a pickup truck
  • Knowledge of British Columbia’s flora and fauna with particular interest in sensitive, threatened and endangered species and ecosystems
  • Familiarity with general approaches to land restoration and enhancement is an asset
  • Willingness to travel and work remotely, sometimes for several days at a time, which may include camping
  • Experience working with Indigenous Groups and First Nations, partners, and stakeholders in a collaborative environment is an asset
  • Self-motivated, with a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn
  • Physical fitness to handle an active summer of work on your feet, in variable weather conditions with some heavy lifting
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a team-based work environment
  • Possess a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License; provide a Driver’s Abstract
  • Must be legally allowed to work in Canada

What we offer

  • Crew Member:
    • Work Term: May 5 to August 28 with possibility of extension
    • 36hrs/week, 9-hour days (Monday-Thursday). Subject to acceptance of averaging agreement.
    • $21 per hour, plus 4% vacation pay.
  • Crew Lead:
    • Work Term: 4 to 6 month contract, start date flexible (ideally March or April) with possibility of extension.
    • 5 hours/week, 9-hour days Monday-Thursday, + 1.5 hours on Friday. Subject to acceptance of averaging agreement.
    • $24 per hour, plus 4% vacation pay.
