Longtime supporter of The Nature Trust, Ray Myles passed away in September 2016. For over 40 years he was an active and committed proponent of conservation initiatives in the Elk Valley in the Kootenay region. Ray was instrumental in supporting the purchase of The Nature Trust’s Big Ranch conservation properties and an enthusiastic participant in many stewardship projects on them. In recognition of all this volunteer work, he was given The Nature Trust Conservation Champion Award in 2007.
He was past president of the Sparwood & District Fish & Wildlife Association. He was involved with the Southern Rocky Mountain Advisory Committee, and the Elk Valley Solid Waste Advisory Committee amongst others.
In July of 2017, a memorial bench was dedicated to Ray Myles by the Sparwood & District Fish & Wildlife Association and his family at Big Ranch, a Nature Trust property.
The Big Ranch is a 484 hectare conservation property that protects critical elk winter and spring habitat.
“Ray was a great guy; energetic, smiley and positive. He will be missed, that’s for sure!”
Rob Neil, Former Nature Trust Kootenay Conservation Land Manager
