Maya Buckner

GIS Technician

Maya Buckner has called Cortes Island home for much of her life. Growing up in this remote Island community has fostered a deep connection to place and a passion for the natural world, which she brings to her work at the Nature Trust of BC, along with her technical skills in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

She spent several years in Database Management and R&D for a local aquaculture operation, where she developed a fascination with marine and intertidal ecosystems. Her experience also includes work in First Nations planning, and most recently, applying GIS to conservation science with Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Maya holds a Bachelor of Science in Geography and Environmental Studies from the University of Victoria and an Advanced Diploma in GIS from Vancouver Island University.
